Atlanta’s Best Running Trails – Cochran Shoals

by Chad on March 3, 2010

Don't go in dem der woods, Ya hear?

On occassion, I like to mix things up – especially my running routes.  I don’t usually have the time to hop in the car and drive somewhere for a run, but when I do, I usually go to Cochran Shoals.  If you haven’t given trail running a shot, you should.  It’s a great change of pace and scenery.

The beauty of Cochran Shoals is that it offers a little bit of something for everyone.  There is a very flat great 5k loop that runs along the river, as well as multi-purpose running/biking/hiking trails that carve their way about 2.5 miles into a somewhat mountain-esque , bordering on eerie (if you are back there alone) setting.  There are a few small trails that branch off of the main path, but it’s easy to stay on course.

On nice days, the main loop can get extremely busy with training groups, walkers that are yapping their freaking heads off and won’t get out of the way and bikers, but there is plenty of room.  Perfect for pets and/or strollers.  There are two parking lots, I always park in the one closest to 285, so I am not sure how you even get to the other.  Trail is well marked every quarter mile.  Good place to do a speed workout.  Parking is $3, so be sure to bring cash or get yourself an annual pass for $25 (you will want to go back).

More trails to come.  I plan to explore some others as soon as Spring arrives.  Let us know if you have any favorites you don’t mind sharing and we will dedicate space on the site for trails and trail running.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I enjoy seeing websites that understand the value of providing a prime resource for free. I truly loved reading your post. Thanks!
